The (GDPR) is the world's highest standard of Data Protection law, which enhance how people can access information about them and places limits on what businesses can do with personal data. The GDPR was designed to adapt existing regulations to a more connected world where data is the common currency.
The GDPR came into force on May 25, 2018 replacing Data Protection laws across Europe and the UK that were almost two decades old. As a result of Brexit, the UK adopted its own version of the GDPR and subsequently introduced the Data Protection Act (2018), which superseded the previous 1998 Data Protection Act.
The GDPR provides greater protection and rights to individuals (including your employees, customers and clients) and effectively altered how businesses and other organisations can handle personal data. Most business will be considered to be data 'controllers' who exercise overall control over the purposes and means of the processing of personal data and are ultimately responsible for any non-compliance.
The GDPR also comes with the threat of larger potential fines (4% of annual global revenue or £17.5 million, whichever is greater), reputational damage and/or supervisory sanctions for those found in breach of the rules.
At GDPR Solutions we believe that with the right support and guidance, Data Protection regulations can actually help businesses grow by leveraging data as an asset, building trust with clients and empowering staff to utilise data compliantly rather than be considered a hinderance to progress.
